Pet Show Activity TimeOne of the best parts of summer is playing outside with your pets! This activity lets your kids take some time to play with their pets, practice some tricks, and show off their stunts.

Pet Award Catagories and Prizes

First, brainstorm some ideas for contests and awards, such as best trick, most obedient, most unusual pet, best in show (prettiest), ugliest, most unique stunt, etc. For each of your categories you will need some prizes to award to the winners. You can either buy small prizes or create your own. One fun idea could be packages of animal-shaped fruit snacks or animal crackers. Other prizes can also be small $1 items from the dollar or craft store or something hand-made like a bracelet.

Announce the Show

Next, you will need to announce the show! Have the kids make up colorful flyers with the event details, and go door-to-door to distribute them throughout the neighborhood a few days ahead of time. Invite parents and neighborhood kids of all ages to participate.

Show Time

The day of the show, choose some adult friends or children to be judges. When the event begins, have some music playing in the background. Designate one person to be the emcee (commentate the event and announce the winners) or have the kids take turns. Announce each contest, one at a time, and invite participants to join in. For example, “The first contest will be for the best pet trick. Who has a trick they would like to show us?”

Allow each participant to try his/her trick more than once, if needed. Each of the judges gives the participant a score, like 1-10 (remember to be generous) for each event. When the participant is done with his/her demonstration, the judges write their scores (large) on a blank piece of paper, and holds it up for the audience to see. The scores are then totaled to award a first, second, and third place.

Everyone gets a small prize for participating. If the prizes are not food items, you might also want to offer small treats and drinks–not only for the kids but for the pets as well.
